Sky-Watcher's marketing department has once again surpassed itself, so here's a quick and painless explanation of what the new Sky-Watcher ESPRIT-EDX series is all about.
It basically replaces the previous ESPRIT series with a new design, and a small but fine ESPRIT 70EDX telescope has been added.
Mechanical upgrade
Other than that, only the design of the tubes has been revamped, i.e. a consistent white finish has been applied, embellished with Sky-Watcher green (anodised) elements – sounds good, doesn't it?
The extremely high optical performance remains unchanged, which is perhaps the most important information for those who already own a Sky-Watcher ESPRIT.
The Rack and Pinion focuser has been fitted with an adapter on the eyepiece side with a 360° rotation function to allow better alignment of the camera or accessories (the focuser itself is not rotatable).
The ESPRIT 100EDX, 120EDX and 150EDX still have a 3-inch rack-and-pinion focuser, also with 360° rotation.
Otherwise, all ESPRIT EDX telescopes now come without additional accessories, i.e. without a finder, zenith mirror/prism or spotting scope, which is also reflected in the price, as they are now cheaper than before.
However, all ESPRIT EDXs have a carrying handle and come in a very sturdy case that perfectly protects the optics.
The two larger models, the ESPRIT 120EDX and 150EDX, have a type of prism rail with a clamp as a carrying handle, which fits any viewfinder à la Vixen System, for example, making it easy to attach accessories such as an optional ToupTek StellaVita (mini PC).
Those who are not yet familiar with the Sky-Watcher ESPRIT series will find that it offers very good optics that can compete quite well with far more expensive optics (as you can see, we don't need superlatives to describe very good optics).
Difference between EVOSTAR & ESPRIT
The only difference is the longer focal length of the Evostar series, which makes it very attractive for planetary/lunar observation, as this requires a longer focal length (which is responsible for the magnification).
The ESPRIT series is more suited to photography, as it has a shorter focal length and therefore a larger field of view. A faster aperture ratio places higher demands on the optics manufacturing process, which has been implemented to a high standard of perfection in the ESPRIT series.
